Mathematics

At Discovery Primary Academy, we have introduced the Maths No Problem scheme. Children use colourful textbooks to learn new skills and workbooks to practise these skills.

To start with, pupils learn new maths ideas using concrete examples, such as counters, then progress to drawing pictorial representations before finally using more abstract symbols, such as the equals sign. This approach to learning gives children the opportunity to share their maths thinking and work co-operatively with a partner or small group. Lessons and activities are designed to be taught using problem solving approaches to encourage pupils’ high-level thinking.

As part of maths lessons, children use journals to explore their thinking and reflect on their learning.
