Mathematics

At Discovery Primary Academy, pupils in Years 1–6 follow the Maths No Problem scheme to support the sequencing of our mathematics teaching. Lessons begin with children exploring new mathematical concepts using concrete resources, such as counters. They then progress to pictorial representations before moving on to abstract symbols, for example using the subtraction sign. This approach encourages children to articulate their mathematical thinking and to work collaboratively with a partner or within a small group.

We also adopt a Maths Mastery approach, which focuses on developing deep, long-term understanding rather than simple memorisation. This ensures that all children can succeed by building secure foundations through small, carefully connected steps. Teaching makes use of multiple representations, encourages reasoning, and provides opportunities for children to apply concepts in a variety of ways.

In addition to daily maths lessons, pupils take part in short, 10-minute fluency sessions that focus on developing arithmetic skills. Children in Years 1–5 also use the NCETM Mastering Number materials to further embed strong number sense.

In EYFS, the mathematics curriculum is written in line with the statutory EYFS framework and is supported by the NCETM Mastering Number materials specifically designed for Reception-aged children.

At home, children are encouraged to use NumBots and Times Table Rock Stars to practise and reinforce their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
