Academy Hot Meals

Accent Catering

We are very lucky to have a wonderful team of lunchtime staff who work under the direction of a Chef Manager. The academy meals now consist of a choice of a hot meal, fresh bread and fresh salad. There are a choice of puddings, including fruit, from the dessert bar.

The children at Discovery absolutely love what is being served. "The best food ever."

"It is like being in a restaurant."  Why not let your child try a meal?

Who is entitled to free school meals?

The government has decided that all pupils in Reception, year 1 and year 2 should be able to have a free school meal at lunchtime. This offer does not depend on your household income or whether you receive any benefits – every child in these classes is eligible to take up the offer.

For parents of children in years 3 - 6, if you are on Income Support of Job Seekers (income based) allowance, you may be entitled to free school meals for your children.  If you think that you might come into this category, you may obtain the necessary form from the academy office and return it when completed for approval.

How much are school dinners for those who need to pay?

Academy lunches for years 3 - 6 cost £2.50 per child. Dinner money should be paid in advance on the first morning of each week, usually Mondays, via our online payment system: 'Pupil Asset Parent'.

Packed lunches

If your child brings a packed lunch to school, please see that it is brought in a suitable container, labelled with the child’s name and class.

Please be reminded that we are a nut-free school. Please do not send your child with any products that contain nuts in their lunch box, in order to keep all of our children with allergies safe.  If you send your child with grapes, please also ensure that you cut grapes lengthways into quarters, as they pose a high choking risk.  Similarly, please also avoid sending children with any meat on the bone, such as chicken drumsticks.

Leak-proof drink containers should be provided and, because of the obvious danger, no glass bottles or fizzy drinks should be included.  Any remains, empty containers, or uneaten food should be taken home, and not emptied into waste paper baskets.  This means that you can see what your child is eating at school.

Lunch box ideas!

Whether you're giving your child a packed lunch every day, or are just doing it now and then between school dinners, coming up with new ideas can be tricky. The Nutritionist Resource website has loads of healthy lunch box ideas for you to try.

Free School Meals Application

From November, Cambridgeshire County Council, Education Welfare Benefits Service will be the new free school meal (FSM) entitlement provider for our Academy.

To assist with the handover to their service, we would be grateful if you could complete a FSM application form if you are currently eligible for free school meals, or feel that you may be eligible. This will allow them to gather the necessary information they need to carry out the checks and provide us with the most up-to-date information regarding your entitlement.

Making an application is quick and simple to do using the online application form at:

www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

Select “no” when asked if you have had a previous claim.

If you do not have internet access, you can give the team a call on 01223 703200, and they can send you a form to complete by post. Paper forms should be returned to;

Cool milk

Our School Milk Scheme

Did you know our school provides a school milk scheme? By registering your child for our school milk scheme, they will receive a 189ml (third of a pint) carton of semi-skimmed milk every day. This is delivered fresh and chilled to their classroom every day.

How much does it cost?

Thanks to government subsidies, school milk is free for all under-fives and is subsided at around £15 a term for children aged five or older.

Why should I register my child?

School milk provides your child with essential nutrients. It is also rehydrating and energy-boosting, helping to bridge the long gap between breakfast and lunch, so children stay focused.
