School Readiness
There are key skills that schools expect children to be learning before their first day at school. Practising these will make your child's journey to Reception as positive as possible.
How can I help my child to get ready?
Your child will have lots of new activities and routines to get used to when they start school. Some of the following skills take time to master, so it's good to introduce them gradually in your daily routine.
If your child needs additional support to settle into Reception, make sure you share as much information as possible with their new teacher. They can work with you to find strategies to support your child.
Growing independence
- Taking care of themselves - for example, putting on coat and shoes, using the toilet and using cutlery.
- Play, creativity and curiousity- for example, taking part in imaginative play, counting building and doing puzzles and exploring the world around them.
Building relationships and communicating
- Being with others- for example, sharing and taking turns, recognising feelings and encouraging them to set boundaries.
- Communication and language - for example, singing along with songs/nursery rhymes, showing they need help by speaking clearly and recognising the pattern of their name.
- Listening and engaging- for example, paying attention for short periods of time, following simple instructions and carrying on with a task even if it is difficult.
Physical development
- Walking up and down steps.
- Climbing, running, jumping and playing.
- Doing simple puzzles and craft activities.
Healthy Routines
- Going to bed around the same time each night.
- Limiting screen time.
- Eating a healthy diet and new foods.
